Oinochoe Greek, circa 350 BC., terracotta. H 13.2 cm. Greece, Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, circa 340-325 BCE. An oinochoe created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to black glazed vessels. The body is decorated with an undulating motif of vertical ribs. Provenance: Hans Knorr Condition (wear, eventual cracks, tear, other imperfections and effects of aging, etc.) Oenochoai typically have only one handle at the back and may include a trefoil mouth and pouring spout. Their size also varies considerably; most, at up to 25 cm tall, could be comfortably held and poured with one hand, but there are much larger examples.
